It has often been said that when you begin to fly fish, an angler just wants to catch something. When they jump that hurdle it generally morphs into ” I want to catch as many as possible”. Some anglers eventually get to the point that they have caught enough fish to learn to appreciate the real reason for fly fishing- to catch fish on your own terms, to enjoy the moment, and to truly understand and appreciate the anticipation of the grab!
While an indicator and a bead may out produce a swung fly at certain times during the salmon spawning cycle, the question then becomes: How many fish do I need to hook in one day? A swung fly will certainly produce hook ups in any river! Am I here to simply hook fish? Or am I here to truly experience the hook up for what it is- an incredible feeling of exhilaration when you FEEL THE GRAB!
Traditional wet fly fishing is one of the oldest forms of the practice… and done right, it will teach you a lot about where salmon, trout and steelhead hold in a river.
Cast… mend… let the flies sink… sweep the target… and make a twitch or two. You’ll feel it when it happens. In this day and age, it’s almost liberating!
The “grab” of a streamer on the swing is why fly fishermen become passionate about swinging flies. From a 20” rainbow to a 45# king, that is what the anticipation is all about!
The Kenai Cache Outfitters is proud to offer Alaska fly fishing Trips for our distinguished clients and veteran fly fishermen & women. Our featured guide and Swing Fly Fishing Instructor learned to fly fish on the streams of Pennsylvania and has been swinging flies since 1984.
Your Alaska Fly Fishing Trips guide “Red” Goodwin arrived on the Kenai in 1978 and has guided fly fishermen for trophy Kings, Rainbows, Dolly Varden and Grayling throughout Alaska, ranging from the Kenai Peninsula to Bristol Bay and many other rivers in Alaska. He also spent 6 months in 1984 fulfilling his childhood dream- fly fishing on the North and South Islands of New Zealand. It was during his stay here that he truly fell in love with swinging flies for trophy trout.
